Top 5 Songs before the Election

Before the election I decided to name my top 5 "political songs." These are all songs that I love for the music, message, basically everything about them. You can find all of these songs in your local record store or on Itunes. Again I urge everyone to go out and vote. Maybe on the way to the polls you will be singing one of these songs. In no particular order my top 5 songs before the election...

1. Masters of War-Bob Dylan on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

Pearl Jam did an awesome version of this song at a Dylan tribute in the 90's and they have sung it some since then. It is a very powerful song.

2. I am a Patriot-Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul on Voice of America

I never knew that Little Steven was actually Steven Van Zant of the E Street Band (or Sil on the Sopranos) until recently. This song has been covered by a few people including Jackson Browne and Pearl Jam. They are all equally good versions. I think it is a song that really sums up my feelings about politics. I am not a republican or a democrat, I believe in one thing...

3. Know Your Rights-The Clash on Combat Rock

This is an awesome song. It is funny, yet completely serious at the same time. It is funny Pearl Jam actually has covered this song too, but the Clash version is better I think.

4. Electioneering-Radiohead on OK Computer

This song is another great song on an equally amazing album. This song is about the lengths politicians will go to get your vote, or rather what they will say. Good things to keep in mind when voting.

5. Christ for President-Wilco on Mermaid Avenue

This was a song that Woody Guthrie wrote the words too years ago and then Wilco made the music and the song. It is a neat little song that really makes you think. No one is perfect and no one can do everything. People run for president so they will make mistakes just like all people.

Anyway I hope you all will take a listen and if you have any songs you think should be added to the list please add them in the comments. Enjoy!

Untitled

I know it has been a while since my last post. Sorry loyal fans. I will try to make up for it the next few days. I have been knee deep in some family issues. Anyway, I have also been working my butt off. I finished this appellate brief I was working on. Basically the question is, is it right for a judge to let the prosecution have a bunch of resets in a case because they haven't prepared (even though the defense is there and ready because no one told them about the resets) and then when the defense cannot have a witness at trial because of only five days notice not allow a reset. To me the answer seems clear but to the courts it might not.

Lets see what else has been going on. I was disappointed by the Tech loss. I really thought we could take Texas. Damn longhorns. They have got to be the biggest disappointment year after year. I mean they always have the best players and stuff but they always do the least with it. Tech does pretty good having a bunch of scrappy no names out there. I was still happy to be a Tech fan.

We watched The Day After Tomorrow on Monday. It was a really good movie. The special effects were good, the story was good. All in all I would give it an A-. It is well worth a rent.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas came out yesterday. I have played through the first few levels and it is looking quite good. I will bring it up more as I play through it.

It has been a pretty good week. I thought there would be a lot of clients coming in because of the Tech/Texas game but it has been a little slow. Oh well, as long as laws exist, criminals will too.

I guess that pretty much updates things since my last post. I will write more often from this post on. The first one back is always the hardest.

Early Voting

Early voting began yesterday. I was one of the first people in Lubbock County to cast my vote. Regardless of what you think, everyone should go out and vote. This election is too tight not to have your voice heard.

I, Robot

I give I, Robot a solid B+. I really liked this movie. It was very cool. The story was good, the special effects were awesome and the action was also pretty intense. I enjoyed this movie a lot. Tish and I went to see it at the dollar theater here in Lubbock. It is nice to see the movies you missed for less than it would cost to rent them. The worst thing about the theater is the complete lack of reguard for fellow movie watchers. Last night this group of four people in the back of the theater kept laughing loudly. It didn't have anything to do with the movie, they were talking amongst themselves and laughing. It got so bad that I actually had to get up and tell the management (and I absolutely hate to get up in a movie and miss any part of it).
I don't know how people can act like that. I mean it was totally on purpose. It seems like people would have a little more reguard for their fellow man. It was still a good movie, however the movie experience could have been better.

Nebraska v. Texas Tech

Tish and I went to the game last night. It was a lot of fun. We went out to tailgate around noon. It was a lot of fun hanging out with all the Tech and Nebraska fans and watching Oklahoma shut out UT.
Tech played there hearts out. Nebraska was just not prepared for our offense. We gave them the worst loss they have ever had. It was also one of the first games that we were leading the whole game. This concerned me a bit because we usually come from behind to win. We ended up holding the lead the whole game and completely preventing Nebraska from scoring the second half.

Final Score
Nebraska 10
Texas Tech 70

Now we have to look towards UT in two weeks. Go Tech!

Three Movies

This weekend we rented three movies: Soul Plane, Man on Fire and Paycheck.

1. Soul Plane Grade: C

Soul Plane was not good. It wasn't entirely bad either. The plot was a little thin, but there were a lot of interesting characters in the movie. Most of the humor was pretty racist. Anyway lets just say I am glad I didn't see it in a movie theater.

2. Paycheck Grade: B-

This was the most recent John Woo movie staring Ben Affleck and Uma Thurman. I enjoyed this movie. It wasn't the greatest action movie ever, but it was pretty good. The premise was cool. Ben Affleck is this reverse engineer who basically has his mind erased whenever he finishes a job. After his most recent one, he wakes up to find he waived his paycheck and received 20 different items which are supposed to help him figure out what the hell is going on. If you like action, I say give this one a try. It is one of Ben Affleck's better recent movies.

3. Man on Fire Grade: B

This was the best of the three movies we rented. This movie stars Denzel Washington as a bodyguard for Dakota Fanning in Mexico City. I didn't realize kidnapping was so bad in Latin America but after some research I found that Man on Fire was fairly accurate. For more see this recent article in The Washington Times. The beginning of the movie is a little slow but the last hour or so is pretty good. It was one of a few movies with Denzel that I actually liked. I generally do not care for his acting, but I would recommend this movie.

Neck and Neck

Last week Bush was ahead in every poll. Among registered voters during September 24-26 Bush was ahead by 11 points. Then after the debate things changed. The latest poll released put Bush and Kerry tied amongst likely voters.
This is the biggest jump in the polls in United States history. The biggest jump prior to this was during the Kennedy/Nixon race when Kennedy jumped up 4 points after their debate.
This was definitely a relief. Even I the eternal optimist was not sure if Kerry was gonna have the umph to make it a close race. Thankfully after the debate, I know he does. Kerry is supposed to be a closer, and I sure hope he continues closing for the next few weeks.
To all the republicans that thought they had it in the bag, ha. To all the democrats, it isn't over yet. And to all those that haven't decided, today is the last day to register in Texas.

Panhandle South Plains Fair

I know it has been a while since my last post. I was really busy last week, and then this weekend I didn't have my laptop at home and for some reason my home computer wasn't letting me enter any text in explorer so I couldn't do a post. But I did want too....

On Friday Tish, Nick and I went out to the Panhandle South Plains Fair. It was the same stuff as always corn dogs, funnel cake, and amazing gadgets you can't live without. It was pretty much the same as all the other years I had been. But then something happened that would change my life forever, I saw the Lumberjills. These are Logging Sport Professionals. So for approximately thirty minutes we saw (notice the pun) four women slice, hack, and cut through a bunch of logs. They also did log rolling. It was quite an experience. State Fair you can eat your heart out.

Immediately after the Lumberjills, the pig races began. Now I had never seen a pig race before, but they were very fast. The announcer (the self-proclaimed "pig lady") gave all the pigs ridiculously bad names like Lance Hamstring and Jean Claude van Ham. It was so bad, it was funny. Nick loved it and even made us stay for an additional race just so he could watch it all again.

All in all, a fun time was had by all. If you ever get a chance to see the Lumberjills or Pig Races, I would highly recommend it.
